The Social Justice Coordinating Team (SJCT), in coordination with several other local churches, is leading a Boot Drive for Kids to collect new and very gently used boots, any size, for school children and teens. The drive goes for the month of October, and the boots will be donated to Clothing, INC, in time for parents to get boots before winter hits. Please place them in the box provided in the Fellowship Hall by October 31. If you’re not a shopper, any member of the SJCT will be glad to shop for you!
The Social Justice Coordinating Team is presenting a new film by Robert Greenwald from Brave New Films “Suppressed – the Fight to Vote” on Saturday, October 26, at 7:00 pm. The film chronicles the rampant voter suppression that affected the outcome of the 2018 midterm election in Georgia and the threat it poses to our elections all across the nation in 2020. We will also have available materials for people to register to vote and to apply for an absentee ballot. Bring friends and family members to view the film and engage in this important conversation.
On the third Sunday of every month, we take a special plate collection to support local charitable agencies, as well as the Michigan Unitarian Universalist Social Justice Network (MUUSJN) and the UU Service Committee (UUSC). Last year (2018-2019) as a congregation we donated $3431.00 in total to these various agencies. We certainly are not a people of scarcity, but rather a people of generosity. Many thanks.
